Weekly Organics

To help reduce wildlife attractants, weekly curbside organics collection will take place in Britannia Beach and Furry Creek from May 7 to October 22, 2025 (instead of the usual biweekly schedule). According to a Waste Composition Study conducted in 2023, 27% of Britannia Beach’s and 21% of Furry Creek’s landfill waste is still compostable material. Let’s change that. Reduce waste going to landfill and keep valuable nutrients in the soils we farm by participating in the curbside organic collection program.

Recycling, organics & landfill waste containers may only be placed at the curb between 6 am - 7 pm on scheduled collection days as per the Wildlife Attractants Bylaw

The SLRD’s WildSafe Coordinator has noted that totes are being put at the curb the day prior to collection. The Bylaw officer has been notified and provided with a list of offending addresses as Bylaw Notices will be issued to residents that continue to not comply with the designated times.

Wildlife attractant management tips:

Garbage is the most reported attractant involved in human-bear conflict.

Bears that access garbage may be killed, injured, cause property damage or become a risk to the community.

  • Keep garbage, recyclables, organics and other attractants secure – indoors is best.

  • Keep garbage, organics and recycling totes clean and odour free.

  • Keep garbage and organics totes locked at all time until the morning of collection. Totes may only be placed at the curb between 6 am - 7 pm on scheduled collection days as per the Wildlife Attractants Bylaw.

  • Freeze smelly items until the morning of collection.

Collecting your organics separately is the best way to reduce waste going to landfill and to reduce landfill methane emissions!
